What is collected, why, who else sees it, and how to make it stop. Written to be read rather than skimmed.

The short version

We store your account details and your practice answers. Written and spoken answers are sent to OpenAI to be marked, and spoken answers are sent there to be transcribed first. Payments go through Polar and we never see your card. Nothing is sold to anybody, and there is no advertising.

What is collected

  • Account — your name, email address, and a one-way hash of your password. The password itself is never stored and cannot be recovered, only reset.
  • Practice — the answers you submit, the scores they receive, which questions you have seen, your streak, and the words saved to your vocabulary list.
  • Audio — recordings of spoken answers, sent for transcription. The transcript is kept with your attempt; the recording is not stored on our servers after transcription.
  • Billing — whether you have an active subscription and when it renews. Card numbers never reach us.
  • Technical — ordinary web server logs, including IP address, kept by our host.

Why

To run the service you asked for: to mark your answers, show your progress, keep you signed in, and take payment. Practice data is also looked at in aggregate to find questions that are broken or unfairly hard. We do not build advertising profiles and we do not sell data.

Who else sees it

Four companies process data on our behalf. Each is linked so you can read their terms rather than take our word for it.

Payments, as merchant of record

Your name, email and billing country. Card details go to Polar and its acquirer; they never reach us.

Marking and transcription

The text of writing and speaking answers you submit for marking, and the audio of spoken answers for transcription.

Database hosting

Everything stored about your account and practice.

Application hosting

Request logs, including IP address, as any web host keeps.

These providers operate outside your country, so your data crosses borders. Marking in particular means your answers are processed in the United States.

If an institution pays for your seat

When a school, college or agency buys your place, the people who administer that account can see your practice: which questions you answered, whether you got them right, your scores, and the text of the answers you wrote along with the feedback they received. That is the point of a class account — it is how a teacher knows who needs help — but you should know it before you write anything.

Other members cannot see your work. Only administrators of the institution paying for your seat can, and only for as long as it pays for it. If you would rather your practice were private, use a personal account instead of claiming a seat.

A note about what you write

Your answers are sent to a third-party model to be marked. Do not put anything in a practice answer that you would not want processed by an external company — identity document numbers, someone else's private information, anything confidential. The tasks never require it, and there is no reason to include it.

How long it is kept

Account and practice data are kept while your account exists, because progress tracking has no meaning without history. Delete your account and it goes, other than records we are required to keep — chiefly payment records, which Polar retains for tax and accounting periods set by law rather than by us.

Your rights

You can ask for a copy of your data, ask for it to be corrected, or ask for it to be deleted. Write from the address you signed up with to support@lingocrest.com and we will confirm once it is done. If you are in the UK or EU you have these rights under data protection law, and you may complain to your national regulator if we handle a request badly.

Cookies and analytics

One cookie holds your signed-in session. It is not used for advertising, and signing out clears it.

We also use Google Analytics and the Meta pixel to understand which pages people read and which advertising brings them here. Both set their own cookies and both receive your IP address, the pages you visit on this site and your device type. Neither runs on our administration pages.

When you create an account or pay for a subscription, we tell Meta that it happened, so we can see which advertising led to it. Your email address and phone number are included in that message, scrambled first using a one-way code so that Meta can tell whether it already knows you without us handing over the address itself. Your name, your answers, your scores and your recordings are never sent to either company.

You can stop all of this with any browser extension that blocks trackers, and the site will work exactly as it does now. If you would rather we did not share your details with Meta at all, write to us and we will exclude your account.

Children

LingoCrest is intended for people preparing for university or immigration English tests and is not designed for children under 13. Where a school buys seats for younger students, it is the school's responsibility to obtain any consent its own law requires.
